Stepping Up for Go Green for EcoMarines

EcoMarines Ambassadors have stepped up to ensure that the Go Green for EcoMarines 2025 event is truly memorable. The generous donations collected by Ambassadors from Eagle Junction State School and Morningside State School will help EcoMarines expand environmental programs to additional schools, benefiting even more students in the Queensland region.
The Eagle Junction Ambassadors organised a fundraising event, Green Day, as part of their sustainability efforts and to raise awareness within the school community. Students and staff were encouraged to wear green and bring a gold coin donation.
According to Claire Partridge, Eagle Junction State School Teacher, “The Ambassadors promoted the event through posters, announcements, and class visits to spread the message about environmental responsibility. All proceeds raised on the day were donated in support of EcoMarines and their broader environmental mission.”
Following World Environment Day (June 5), Morningside State Ambassadors organised a special event, a dress-up-free day for the whole school. Students were encouraged to dress as their favourite animal or wear green and bring a gold coin donation.
Sharon Wetzig, Morningside State School Sustainability Partner, highlights the importance of being an EcoMarines school: “Being an EcoMarines school means being part of a network of schools, knowing that other people are working on initiatives and raising awareness for the environment. We are provided with that kind of connection with other schools.”
Projects
One of the Morningside State Ambassadors’ current projects is improving waste management in the playground. An initial audit assessed how well students used the bins. A presentation on the findings was given at the assembly, and students are now conducting lunchtime bin monitoring to assist their peers in sorting the waste properly.
Throughout June, the Eagle Junction Ambassadors have led several impactful initiatives as part of the Go Green for EcoMarines campaign, with Green Day being a highlight. Every student received a donated green apple as a healthy and environmentally friendly treat.
The entire school took part in a planned power-down hour, where lights, screens, and air conditioning were turned off to raise awareness of energy conservation. Students were encouraged to participate in active travel, walking, riding, or scootering to school to reduce vehicle emissions.
Ms. Partridge completes, “Being an EcoMarines School means being part of a wider community committed to environmental leadership, sustainability, and positive change. It involves empowering student leaders and EcoMarines Ambassadors to drive initiatives that protect and preserve our natural environment, both locally and globally.”
