EcoMarines Attending 2026 Townsville Waterways Report Card Launch
It was an absolute pleasure for EcoMarines to attend the 2026 Townsville Waterways Report Card Launch at the Metropole Hotel. This monumental event brings together organisations, educators, community representatives and environmental leaders, all with a shared commitment to protecting and improving the health of North Queensland’s waterways.
The launch of the annual report card serves as a pivotal moment for regional collaboration. This event highlights the state of our local waterways while honouring the teamwork happening across the community. Most importantly, it celebrates the partnerships that turn scientific knowledge into meaningful environmental action.
Representing EcoMarines at the launch was Kass, our Program Coordinator for North Queensland, who was joined by Leonie De Lai from Townsville Grammar School (North Shore). It was particularly meaningful to have one of our dedicated EcoMarines teachers help represent us. The experience helped EcoMarines to connect with many individuals and organisations contributing to the work of our valued partner, Healthy Waters Partnership for the Dry Tropics.
Acknowledging the Health of Our Waterways
The launch of the waterways report card provides an opportunity to reflect on the latest findings related to the local waterway’s health and significance of it with evidence-based and community-led action.
Healthy waterways support local ecosystems, wildlife and communities, and protecting them requires ongoing collaboration, education and shared responsibility. The Report Card outlines the value of understanding the condition of our waterways so that communities can make informed decisions and take meaningful action.
Turning Knowledge into Action
Together with Healthy Waters Partnership for the Dry Tropics, EcoMarines is helping students develop a stronger understanding of their local environment while showing them how their everyday choices can contribute to positive environmental outcomes.
Events in our program, like the EcoMarines Billabong Sanctuary Adventure Day bring this partnership to life. Through immersive learning experiences, students don’t just learn about waterway health, but explore the science behind local catchments, understand the challenges facing these ecosystems, and discover how their everyday choices can make a real difference.
When organisations work together with a shared vision, we create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. We’re empowering the next generation with the knowledge, confidence, and passion to care for the waterways and environments that sustain us all.
