Reflecting on BCC Waterways Event: A Moment Worth Revisiting
In 2022, EcoMarines partnered up with Brisbane City Council at Nudgee Beach Reserve for special waterways event that brought our community, EcoMarines Ambassadors, education, and environmental action together in one beautiful coastal region.
During the workshop, our EcoMarines Ambassadors had opportunities to learn about the importance of protecting Brisbane’s waterways and the ecosystems that depend on them. They found themselves surrounded by mangroves and other native wildlife, truly showcasing the natural beauty of the reserve.
The event explored how healthy waterways and ecosystems help protect a wide range of species, including frogs, dugongs, and shorebirds, as well as our native mangrove habitats. It was a reminder that every part of our environment is tightly connected, and that looking after our local waterways also means helping protect the wildlife that calls these places home.
One of the most memorable messages from the day was learning about our native migratory shorebirds, some of which travel up to 12,000 kilometres each year. These incredible journeys rely on safe and healthy coastal habitats, making places like Nudgee Beach Reserve especially important for their survival.
Throughout this hands-on learning experience, the event encouraged students and community to think about how their small actions bring big waves of difference for our environment, whether it is reducing litter, protecting native habitats, learning about native species, or sharing this knowledge with others.
Looking back from 2026, this moment continues to reflect what EcoMarines is all about: inspiring young people and communities to care for our environments, protect wildlife, and make a positive impact for our planet.
As we revisit this story, we are reminded that environmental change starts with connection. When people understand the places around them, they are more likely to protect them and together, we can create healthier environments when the entire community does their part!
