Elanora State High School Environmentalists
Elanora State High School is not just a place of learning; it is a living example of sustainability.
With their slogan, “Making Elanora Environmental Aware!”, the school maintains an ongoing effort to improve the surrounding area through real, meaningful change.
In 2025, Elanora State High School placed a strong emphasis on reducing consumption, managing resources and waste responsibly, and cutting down on single-use plastics. While this may seem like a steep task, Elanora State High School’s Environmentalists are practically professionals, with their program refining and improving each year.
Alongside these goals, the school participates in a broad range of events, including Clean Up Australia Day, World Environment Day, and Keep Australia Beautiful Week. Beyond these events, the school also attends sustainability summits with partner schools, visits environmental centres, and contributes to the ever-growing community garden.
By turning events into “House Challenges”, the Ambassadors not only celebrate their accomplishments but also foster a healthy competitive spirit.
Elanora State High School has also achieved the remarkable milestone of planting and caring for 40 native trees. These trees were generously donated by Regen Australia.
During Waste-Free Lunch Day, house captains awarded points to students with lunches free from single-use plastics. The day was a fantastic success, with 239 house points earned.
Elanora State High School has previously hosted the Sustainable Schools Summit, bringing together like-minded schools to explore shared goals, challenges, and future projects. Participating schools included:
- Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School
- Nerang State High School
- Palm Beach Currumbin State High School
- Varsity College
Students are eagerly looking forward to this year’s summit, with even more schools expected to join.
Elanora State High School also attended the annual EcoMarines Breakfast, hosted by the Gold Coast City Council, where students were invited as keynote speakers to share their experiences and projects.
Back at school, the Elanora Environmentalists put their presentation skills to work by:
- Delivering weekly educational homeroom slides and updates
- Presenting at whole-school events and assemblies
- Maintaining a sustainability-focused bulletin board in the school’s Hub
The school goes above and beyond by creating, maintaining, and promoting classroom paper-recycling boxes, carefully sorting collections to ensure everything is recycled correctly. Students also collect drink containers weekly using the school’s bright orange recycling bags, supporting ongoing recycling efforts across the campus.
